BLUE WATER BAY is the kind of beach house that matches its surroundings so effortlessly it looks as if it has always been there. The exterior walls are plastered with beach sand and have been dusted a blushing pink by the elements. The elements, particularly the South Easter, were carefully considered in every aspect of the design. Built in a U shape, Shades of White offers maximum protection from the wind. Architect, Wynand Wilsenach designed the house with family in mind. The large country kitchen perfect for big sit down breakfasts and the sheltered courtyard veranda is perfect for the kind of lunches that carry on all the way over into dinner, enjoying seafood straight off the boat and delectable local fare.
The living area is designed for guests to pad into the house straight from a swim or surf, with screeded concrete floors in one large open plan room. The deck meets the indigenous fynbos garden which is just a short meander down to the beach. As holiday relaxation sets in even this walk may feel like too much effort and guests can instead watch the waves crash onto the beach from the comfort of bed.
The interiors and furnishing strongly reflects the local flavor, and a large part of the beach house’s charm lies in its solid, hand crafted furniture. The shell curtains made from limpids, whelks and other local shells creates a charming dappled light effect on sunny afternoons and the art on display is all from local artists and highlight the region’s natural beauty.
The boules court opposite Shades of White is the cherry on top in the sundae of rustic country living. The land was acquired to ensure that the views of Shades of White would never be obstructed. Today champagne and oyster infused games of boules is a popular activity for the whole neighbourhood.
Sip your espresso in bed overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, or sit on the deck and watch tortoises amble through the indigenous garden and meerkats dart from bush to bush. Shades of White is a beach retreat worthy of the gods.
